Among the 46,000 Lions Clubs worldwide, there are
725 plus Lions, Lioness & Leo clubs in Wisconsin
with approximately 25,000 members. This membership
initiated a Lions Camp in 1956 to serve blind
children with a week of camping, not only for the
camping experience, but for enhancing their skills
to cope with a life of blindness. This early
project has been expanded to serve children with
other disabilities such as deaf or hard of hearing,
mild cognitively disabled and children with
diabetes.
The goal of the camp is to assist each child in the
development of self-confidence, independence, social
and outdoor recreational skills, environmental
awareness, while creating a memorable experience for
the campers.
The experiences of a week at Lions Camp have been
known to change campers’ lives forever. In addition
to teaching them that they are capable of doing
whatever they choose, they learn about the
environment and the great outdoors. They also
establish friendships that will last a life time.
