Fewer than 20% of children are adequately screened
for vision problems in the United States today.
Vision problems affect one-in-twenty preschoolers,
and one-in-four school-age children. Most children
cannot tell when they see poorly. Without early
detection and treatment, children’s vision problems
can lead to a variety of complications including
permanent loss of vision, learning difficulties, and
delayed development. The goal of the
Children’s Vision Screening Project is to see that
all children, ages six months through their teens,
receive a vision check and recommend a professional
exam where indicated. So far the Lions of Wisconsin
have screened over 200,000 children with over 12,000
children referred to professionals.
